Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, And Luke Bryan Search For The Next American Idol

The road to musical success is different for every artist, and the rise of reality singing shows like American Idol has changed the game for many musicians hoping to make it big. Of course, the franchise produced one of the leading ladies of country music, Carrie Underwood, who has now returned to the show as a judge.

So far, season 23 of the show has uncovered hidden talent, exciting potential, and a few surprises along the way.

Aspiring Singer YANI Surprises The American Idol Judges With A Carrie Underwood Cover

Hoping to stand out amongst her competitors was YANI, a 26-year-old vocalist from New Jersey. At the start of her audition, she tells the judges:

“I will be singing a song that, perhaps, is familiar.”

She describes the song as “pretty deep” and adds:

“We’ll just see how you take it.”

The pianist begins what appears to be a ballad before transitioning into the tune of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” Carrie Underwood’s football-themed song. The judges erupt in laughter at the realization.

The song was composed to the tune of Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” with a clever lyrical rewrite to tie into the sport. Carrie Underwood has been performing the anthem ahead of NBC’s Sunday Night Football for an impressive 12 seasons.

Did YANI’s risk pay off?

Despite being comedic in nature, the song choice showed off YANI’s range and vocal control. However, Luke Bryan felt the display was “too theatrical” for American Idol and voted “no.”

Carrie Underwood voted “yes” but with the disclaimer:

“I don’t know if you are right for this show, but I can’t say no to your voice.”

Finally, Lionel Richie broke the tie and voted “yes.” YANI will move on to the next round of competition in Hollywood Week!
