It’s not even April, and we’ve already witnessed multiple heartwarming encounters between Keith Urban and his fans. Last month, the New Zealand-born crooner, 57, made two young concertgoers’ dreams come true when he invited them onstage during a Las Vegas show. More recently, Urban leapt from the stage at the Ryman Auditorium to embrace a fan who overcame cancer.
“I Beat Cancer To Hug Keith Urban”
Susan G. Komen® hosted the inaugural Band As One Nashville: A Concert for the Cure on Wednesday (March 26) at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Country stars like Keith Urban and headliner Trisha Yearwood took the stage to help raise funds for breast cancer patients and their loved ones.
At one point, the 15-time ACM Award winner spotted a woman in the crowd holding up a sign declaring, “I beat cancer to hug Keith Urban.” And with that, according to WSM Radio, the “Messed Up As Me” singer jumped from the stage to grant that wish. As the footage made the rounds on social media, fans noted that the sweet moment wasn’t at all out of Urban’s character. “Literally the nicest guy in Nashville,” one Instagram user commented. “Real deal!”
Another wrote, “That is such a genuine hug…most people don’t give solid true hugs like that! Love it!”
Urban Recounts His “Surreal” Opry Experiences
Keith Urban joined the Grand Ole Opry’s ranks more than a decade ago. However, the “Days Go By” singer isn’t above feeling starstruck. During the Opry’s 100th anniversary special on March 19, he performed Crystal Gayle’s signature hit “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” in front of the crossover star.
“It’s surreal and very intimidating playing ‘Don’t It Make [My] Brown Eyes Blue’ in front of Crystal Gayle sitting on the front row,” Urban said with a laugh. “I was trying not to look at her, but it was impossible.”
And it was far from the first surreal Opry moment that the “Cop Car” singer has experienced. “The Opry is surreal anyway, ’cause all these artists I grew up playing their music and then they’re there,” he said. “I remember the first time I met Ricky Skaggs sidestage, it was like meeting Santa Claus… It wasn’t a guy that looked like Ricky Skaggs. It was really Ricky Skaggs, and he’s just hanging sidestage, you know? It’s a huge honor being invited into that family.”
