In 2016, American Idol became more than a stage—it became a moment of raw emotion. As Kelly Clarkson sang Piece By Piece, her voice cracked under the weight of her own story. Pregnant and married to the man who restored her faith in love, she revisited the scars of her father’s abandonment. The room felt it. The audience wept. Judge Keith Urban, still grieving his father’s recent passing, couldn’t hold back. As Clarkson’s voice trembled with pain and gratitude, Urban broke down, sobbing. It wasn’t just a song—it was a shared ache, a moment of love, loss, and healing.

Kelly Clarkson returned to the American Idol stage during the show’s final season on Fox in 2016 with an emotional performance that left everyone in tears.

Kelly Clarkson, the 2002 Idol champ, took the stage to perform her heart-wrenching single, “Piece By Piece.” The autobiographical tune was written by Clarkson after the birth of her first child, River Rose, and draws comparisons between Clarkson’s father who left her as a child, and her then-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

“I had [my daughter] River, and even from holding her the first day, I was like, how could anyone walk away from that? Then I started thinking that my husband [Brandon Blackstock] is such a great father,” Clarkson told Glamour about the inspiration behind her song. “He changes diapers, he stays up, and if I’ve had a late night, he’ll wake up with her in the morning. We’re definite partners, and I felt so lucky.”

Clarkson added that a conversation with her sister led to a realization that she was fortunate to find a husband that was unlike the father she was estranged from.

“….Sometimes girls with daddy issues don’t find men like that! You find men who are all you knew, and I just feel so lucky,” the “Since U Been Gone” singer said. “I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyone’s human. I don’t understand it for me, but I understand the depth of what that is—having a child—now, and he’s made me want to be that much more present in my family.”

Kelly Clarkson made Keith Urban cry during the performance.

Clarkson, who was pregnant with her son, broke down while singing “Piece By Piece” for the Idol crowd. But, it was Keith Urban‘s response to the song that had everyone talking. The American Idol judge and country star was deeply moved by the song and wept during the performance.

Urban lost his father in December of 2016 following a battle with cancer. While Clarkson’s song may have been a reminder of his father, the reason for Urban’s tears could also be because the song is simply powerful.

Urban took to Twitter to praise Clarkson following her stunning performance.

Clarkson’s performance also resonated with people at home. The song’s Facebook video garnered more than 20 million views overnight, and the song shot to #2 on the charts.

Kelly rewrote the lyrics to “Piece By Piece” after her split from Brandon Blackstock.

Kelly and Brandon divorced in 2020, leading the Idol champ to make some lyrical changes. During a 2023 performance of the song during her Las Vegas residency, Clarkson told the crowd, “This song I initially wrote, just, super hopeful, right? And well, sometimes hopeful turns into hopeless. So here we go, ‘Piece by Piece.’”

The changes in the song left out all references to her ex-husband and reflected on her own ability to pick up the pieces and heal amid difficult circumstances.
