26-Year-Old Paralyzed Country Singer Moves ‘American Idol’ Judges to Tears With Emotional Original Song

It’s business as usual for American Idol this season, albeit with a slightly different judging lineup. Kicking off its 23rd season, the ABC singing reality competition show follows Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood on their quest to discover the next generation of musical talent. We’ve already witnessed plenty of emotional gut punches, but Sam Sparks’ American Idol audition just may take the cake this year.

Sam Sparks Overcame a Horrific Accident To Try Out For ‘American Idol’

Growing up in tiny Dardanelle, Arkansas, Sam Sparks cultivated a passion for cars at an early age. At just 15, he built one of his own.

Unfortunately, a car was also the scene of the 26-year-old’s worst nightmare. Two years ago, he got behind the wheel on a rainy day and headed for a shop roughly two miles from home. A vehicle failure led to Sparks losing control of the car, which careened off the road and flew 35 yards through the air before hitting a parked car head-on.

“I looked down, and I couldn’t move my legs,” Sparks said in a sneak peek of his American Idol audition. “I immediately knew that my back was broken.”

Now paralyzed from the waist down, the “y’all-ternative” singer uses a wheelchair daily. Someone gifted him a guitar while he was recovering, and he began practicing in the hospital parking garage.

“It absolutely got me through what I was going through,” Sparks told the judges. “I guess the two things I’ve always loved are going fast and being loud. And I still get to do those things today. I just do it a little different.”

He then launched into a rendition of an original song, “Colorado Gray.” His gritty vocals perfectly mingle desperation and hope as he sings, Been here a time or two and made my life a mess / What do I have to do to bring my soul to rest?

Did Sam Punch His Golden Ticket?

While Sparks’ self-penned song cast a somber tone over the audition room, all three American Idol judges made it clear they couldn’t have been more thrilled with his performance.

“I think you definitely have something in here and in here,” Carrie Underwood said, gesturing first to her heart and then her throat, “that I would like to hear more of.”

Praising the song’s “gritty rock tone,” Luke Bryan said, “I love how your voice is yours and different than what we have.”

Next, Lionel Richie insisted on bringing in Sparks’ best friend, Malick, who signed him up for Idol and accompanied him to the audition. Malick stood beside his buddy as all three judges informed him that he was indeed Hollywood bound.

Catch Sam’ Sparks full audition on American Idol Sunday, March 23, at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
