MY 5-YEAR-OLD MADE AN ENTIRE RESTAURANT CRY WITH ONE SIMPLE ACT

We sat in a cozy corner booth at Waffle House, enjoying a quiet dinner together. The familiar sounds of clinking dishes and sizzling hash browns created a warm atmosphere. Suddenly, my five-year-old son, Josiah, tugged at my sleeve and pointed outside. “Who is that?” he whispered, curious about a man standing under a flickering streetlight, looking weary and lost.

I gently explained to Josiah that the man might be homeless, which sparked a deeper concern in him. Without hesitation, he jumped out of the booth and ran to the door, waving at the man with an infectious smile. “You don’t have a home? You can eat with us!” he called out, drawing the attention of everyone in the restaurant. I smiled and encouraged the man to join us, and he cautiously stepped inside.

When the waitress approached, Josiah eagerly suggested, “Get him the biggest burger we have!” Laughter broke the tension, and as the food arrived, Josiah insisted on praying for the man. In that moment, with heads bowed and hands clasped, a wave of emotion swept through the room, leaving many in tears, including me. The man, visibly moved, shared that Josiah’s kindness gave him hope for the future.

As the evening unfolded, Josiah continued to connect with the man, and other diners began to contribute money for him. It was heartwarming to see how one small act of kindness had inspired a ripple effect of generosity. When we left, the man was no longer alone; he was surrounded by new friends who treated him with dignity. That night, as I tucked Josiah into bed, he asked if he had done a good thing. I kissed him and told him he had done wonderfully, realizing that kindness is a way of life we can all embrace every day.
