Cracker Barrel is facing online controversy following the debut of its first logo redesign in nearly 50 years — a move that quickly became entangled in misinformation and political debate.
The backlash began when a false viral post claimed the company’s CEO said, “MAGA doesn’t have to eat here.” Cracker Barrel swiftly denied the rumor, telling Newsweek that “our values haven’t changed” and that the quote had no basis in fact.
The restaurant chain, known for its Southern-style comfort food and nostalgic décor, said the $700 million rebrand was meant to modernize its image while remaining true to its roots. The refreshed logo, now emphasizing the barrel shape, was described as a nod to heritage rather than a departure from it.
Still, the redesign drew criticism from some conservatives who called it a “woke rebrand.” Representative Byron Donalds even posted, “It’s time to Make Cracker Barrel Great Again,” while others on social media mocked the outrage as misplaced. Cracker Barrel responded that “Uncle Herschel remains front and center” and reiterated its long-standing mission of hospitality and community. Despite the noise online, the company insists the update reflects continuity — not change — in its brand identity.
