At Least Four Dead in Public Shooting as Community Reels, Authorities Secure Scene, Hospitals Treat the Wounded, and Investigators Launch Urgent Inquiry Into a Violent Attack That Sparked Panic, Claimed Lives, and Renewed Calls for Safety, Accountability, and Collective Healing

A winter afternoon at Brown University turned tragic on December 13, 2025, when gunfire erupted inside the Barus & Holley engineering building. What began as a normal academic day became chaos as students barricaded rooms, fled hallways, and called for help. Police and emergency crews arrived within minutes, locking down the campus as fear spread across the university community.

By the time the building was secured, two students had been killed and nine others injured, several critically. The gunman fled on foot, disappearing into nearby neighborhoods, leaving investigators and the campus stunned. Students sheltered in place through a campus-wide lockdown, while classes, exams, and events were abruptly canceled.

In the days that followed, Brown focused on grief and healing. Vigils, counseling services, and memorials appeared across campus as students, faculty, and local residents gathered to mourn the victims. Discussions around safety and mental health intensified, and additional security measures were put in place to reassure the shaken community.

The investigation remains ongoing, involving Providence police, state authorities, and the FBI. A reward was offered for information, and investigators are examining every lead, including a possible connection to another academic killing in Massachusetts. As Brown University moves forward, its community continues balancing the search for justice with the difficult work of recovery.
