My seven-year-old daughter and my husband started having locked-door “private talks” in the garage every afternoon. The radio would go on, the door would lock, and when I asked questions, I got the same rehearsed answer from both of them: You’re not invited. One afternoon, when my husband was out, I hid a small camera in the garage. The first time I watched, my stomach dropped: he rolled back a rug and lifted a hidden door in the concrete floor. I thought I was about to uncover something that would break my family. Instead, he came back up carrying yarn, needles, and a half-finished sweater.
Every day after that, I watched them knit together—laughing, fixing mistakes, making sweaters with crooked letters stitched across the front. One pink and child-sized. One gray and nearly finished. Both said the same thing: I have the best mom in the world. They were planning a surprise for my birthday, something quiet and loving, hidden only so I wouldn’t see it coming.
On my birthday, they gave me the sweaters and made us all put them on. I never told my husband about the camera. I unplugged it and put it away. Now when my daughter grabs his hand and says, “Private talks in the garage, Dad?” the panic doesn’t come back—I just feel the sweater against my skin and remember what was really happening behind that door.
