Plus size is the new average: American women big and beautiful

A new study is redefining what the “average” American woman looks like — and it’s not what most clothing racks are built for. Today, the typical size falls between 16 and 18 (with plus size 20W), and the average waist is now 37.5 inches, up from 34.9 inches over the past two decades. Researchers say it’s long past time for the fashion industry to catch up and design for the bodies most women actually have, not the ones brands still pretend are “standard.”

Behind these numbers is a bigger shift. The average American woman now weighs about 170.6 pounds, compared to 140 pounds in the 1960s. Sedentary lifestyles, ultra-processed foods, changing cultural attitudes around body image, and genetics all play a role. While some of this reflects a positive move toward body acceptance, it also overlaps with a serious public health concern.

Obesity rates have doubled since 1990, bringing higher risks of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Experts at places like the Mayo Clinic stress that obesity isn’t just a cosmetic issue — it’s a medical one, affecting how long and how well people live.

Social media sits right in the middle of this tension. On one hand, it’s helped expand beauty standards and celebrate bodies of all sizes. On the other, it can normalize unhealthy habits or glamorize extremes. Used mindfully, it has the power to promote both confidence and health. Used carelessly, it can do the opposite. What’s your take — are we moving toward a healthier kind of body acceptance, or just getting used to being unwell?
