FBI special agents in Boston arrested a City Councilor on Friday morning on charges of public corruption, according to reports.
While the FBI’s statement did not release the name of the lawmaker, media reports identified her as Tania Fernandes Anderson, Fox News reported, citing local outlet WCVB.
Federal authorities had been investigating Fernandes Anderson, and WCVB reported seeing FBI agents outside her Dorchester home this morning as they took her into custody.
The station reports that Fernandes Anderson is facing federal charges of wire fraud and theft related to federally funded programs.
The station also reported that in 2023, the Massachusetts Ethics Commission found that Fernandes Anderson violated conflict-of-interest laws by hiring her sister and son at City Hall after her election in 2021, subsequently raising their salaries to $70,000 annually.
She reportedly ended their employment in 2022 and settled the violation with a $5,000 fine.
