In August 2021, Aireal Bonner was kicked out of Southern Kitchen & Bar in Birmingham after refusing to cover her crocheted top, which the restaurant claimed violated its dress code. Bonner argued her attire was not the real reason, suggesting the incident was racially motivated, citing her Afro-centric appearance. The restaurant apologized for the timing of the confrontation but maintained their dress code policy. Bonner rejected the apology, calling it “laughable,” and encouraged negative reviews, which led to the restaurant’s Yelp page being removed. Alabama Rally Against Injustice organized a protest, alleging other women wore similar clothing without issue.
