After Monroe High School’s football team took a knee during the national anthem to support Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality, two referees, Ernie and Anthony Lunardelli, staged their own protest by walking off the field. Ernie, upset by the protest during the anthem, stated he couldn’t tolerate the disrespect for the flag, the military, and the country. Despite warning the league beforehand, the Lunardellis quit when the players knelt. The game was later questioned for not having the correct officials, and Ernie plans to challenge it legally.
