Early Saturday, a passenger bus from Atlanta to Dallas crashed on Interstate 20 in Warren County, Mississippi, killing seven, including a 6-year-old and a 16-year-old, and injuring 36 others. The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported the bus overturned around 12:40 a.m., with no other vehicles involved.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) noted a tire failure but has not determined the exact cause of the crash. Six victims died at the scene, and one later in the hospital; all were Guatemalan nationals, though their identities are pending notification of next of kin.
The bus carried 41 passengers, including two drivers, and hospitals treated 36 survivors for injuries. Initially, 37 injuries were reported. The 2018 Volvo bus, owned by Regiomontanos Autobuses, has a history of safety incidents, including one fatal crash in the past two years.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is reviewing Regiomontanos Autobuses, which has a “conditional” safety rating. Both the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the NTSB are investigating the crash, with the NTSB sending a team to assist.
