‘Relationship Expert’ Wants Parents To Get…

Deanne Carson, a self-proclaimed relationship expert and sexuality educator, sparked controversy with her claim that parents should ask babies for consent before changing their diapers. Appearing on ABC in 2018, Carson explained that although babies can’t speak, they can communicate nonverbally through eye contact and gestures. She argued that this approach helps foster a culture of consent within the household.

Her idea quickly gained attention online, but many parents found it impractical, with some expressing skepticism about how to handle situations if a baby “says no.” Even the reporters interviewing Carson were doubtful, questioning how parents should proceed in such cases.

Despite the backlash, Carson defended her stance, asserting that it’s important to respect a baby’s autonomy, even at a very young age. The debate highlights the tension between fostering independence and the practicalities of parenting.

The conversation around Carson’s claim continues to divide opinion, with critics arguing that it overlooks the basic needs and realities of caring for an infant.
