Georgia GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk is set to spearhead a new committee to investigate the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, with support from House Speaker Mike Johnson. This marks a continued effort by the Republican Party to reframe the narrative surrounding the event. With the GOP controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House, the investigation will be part of a broader Republican agenda to continue investigations from the previous Congress.
Loudermilk, while still finalizing the details, suggested that the new committee might give Speaker Johnson more control over panel selections and the direction of the investigation. This move aligns with ongoing Republican efforts to shield former President Trump from accountability for the January 6 violence. Loudermilk has criticized the previous January 6 select committee for its narrow focus on Trump’s role in the events.
Despite concerns that the new committee’s name could trigger controversy, Loudermilk stressed that it would address broader security issues beyond just the January 6 attack. Speaker Johnson has publicly committed to fully funding the investigation, which will also review the security response to the Capitol breach and the broader context of the attack.
As Republicans use their new majority to pursue these investigations, they have also reissued subpoenas related to the Hunter Biden case and special counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into President Biden’s handling of classified documents. These subpoenas aim to continue the politically charged probes from the previous Congress, with an eye toward obtaining documents and information from the Justice Department.
