A heartbreaking tragedy occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, where 14-year-old Mason Schermerhorn was one of four students killed in a mass shooting. Before his death, Mason sent a final text to his mother from a school restroom, expressing his fear and love during the chaos.
Mason’s family is devastated by the loss. His sister, Alanna Wallace, remembered him as a lively, kind, and determined boy who didn’t let his autism define him. He was learning to play the trumpet to follow in his sister’s footsteps and loved playing video games and visiting amusement parks. He embraced everyone, no matter their differences.
On the day of the shooting, youth minister Ronald Clark, a family friend, rushed to help Mason’s mother. She had received a text from Mason saying he was hiding in the restroom, believing he was safe. Tragically, Clark later confirmed that Mason was among the victims.
The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, will be charged as an adult. In the face of such sorrow, Alanna is drawing strength from the memories of Mason’s loving, joyful spirit and the support of her friends.
