Respecting people’s preferred names and pronouns is essential in honoring their identities, yet many still resist this practice due to outdated beliefs or a lack of understanding. Bennett Kaspar-Williams, who now identifies as non-binary and uses both he/him and they/them pronouns, faced significant challenges during his childbirth experience in 2020. Despite identifying as male, he was repeatedly misgendered by hospital staff, who referred to him as a mother instead of a father.
Kaspar-Williams, who began transitioning in 2014 after realizing he was transgender, experienced both the joys and difficulties of pregnancy. However, he was deeply disheartened by the misgendering from medical staff, which ignored his gender identity despite his male identification on medical forms. He expressed his distress and emphasized the need to separate womanhood from motherhood, challenging the false belief that all women can become mothers and that all mothers carry children.
Kaspar-Williams’ story highlights the complexities of identity and the importance of respecting individual self-identification. He stressed that childbirth and gender identity are not inherently linked, and that being born with a uterus does not guarantee the ability to conceive or carry children. His journey reflects the need to break the false equivalency between womanhood and motherhood and to acknowledge diverse experiences.
This experience underscores the need for greater awareness and sensitivity in medical settings, especially as society continues to evolve. By honoring people’s chosen pronouns and names, we move toward a more inclusive and respectful world, and Kaspar-Williams’ story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of respecting each other’s identities in all aspects of life.
