During President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Bishop Mariann Budde delivered a sermon that caught many by surprise. She addressed Trump directly, urging him to show mercy to those fearful of their future, especially in the LGBTQIA+ community.
The bishop criticized some of Trump’s executive orders, including those about immigration and birthright citizenship, stressing the importance of compassion for immigrants who contribute to society. She also appealed to Trump to have mercy on families fearing deportation and to show compassion to refugees.
Bishop Budde has previously criticized Trump, particularly when he used a Bible for a photo op outside St. John’s Episcopal Church in 2020. After the inauguration sermon, Trump dismissed it, saying he didn’t think it was a good service.
