Senate Passes Laken Riley Act In First Move After Trump Inauguration

The Senate passed the Laken Riley Act, which requires the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of serious crimes, with bipartisan support.

Named after a college student killed by a released immigrant, it also includes an amendment (Sarah’s Law) expanding detention for crimes resulting in death or harm.

Despite its passing, the bill faces concerns about cost and resources.

It must now pass the House before reaching President Trump. Senate Democrats remain divided over the bill, with ongoing debates on border security and its impact on the party.
