While it’s not as common now, many people have likely seen sneakers tied together by their laces tossed onto power lines. Growing up, I assumed it was just something neighborhood kids did, but there are actually several theories behind this behavior.
One theory dates back to wartime, suggesting soldiers tossed their boots after completing their training or post, possibly inspiring other shoe-throwing behaviors. Another theory posits that gangs use it to mark their territory, though this hasn’t been proven.
Some believe the shoes are tossed as a form of bullying, with movies often depicting bullies throwing sneakers onto power lines. While I think this might not be the most common reason, it could certainly happen occasionally.
The most popular theory—and the one I believe—suggests people toss sneakers onto power lines “just because.” Maybe it’s a fun thing to do with old shoes, and once others see it happening, they join in. It’s simply kids being kids.
