Hemmer predicted that the upcoming contest between Paxton and Talarico could develop into one of the country’s most expensive Senate elections. Republican organizations have already begun highlighting Talarico’s previous comments concerning religion, biological sex, immigration and the criminal justice system. They believe those statements could create difficulties for him with moderate and conservative Texas voters. Democrats, meanwhile, are expected to focus on Paxton’s political controversies and argue that his nomination gives them an unusual opportunity to compete for the seat.
