The committee sought information concerning Omar’s past appearances at Safari Restaurant, a Minneapolis business whose operators were later connected to the Feeding Our Future case. Omar held her 2018 election-night celebration at the restaurant and later appeared in a Somali-language television segment promoting it as a location distributing meals during the pandemic.
Trial exhibit descriptions reportedly referenced emails and messages between Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock and members of Omar’s staff. However, the exhibit list did not contain the complete communications, making it unclear what assistance, if any, Omar’s office provided.
Omar has not been accused or charged with any crime connected to the Feeding Our Future scheme.
Democratic members of the committee opposed the subpoena, arguing that Republicans were using the fraud investigation to target a political opponent.
Democratic Rep. Dave Pinto questioned why the subpoena was being pursued during the committee’s final meeting of the legislative session. He argued that even if documents were received, there was little time remaining for the committee to review the information or take further action.
Pinto also suggested that federal authorities already possess the resources and jurisdiction necessary to investigate Omar if credible evidence of wrongdoing exists.
The committee’s vote effectively prevented the Minnesota House panel from compelling Omar to testify or provide documents before the session ended.
Robbins indicated that Republicans could continue pursuing the matter through federal channels. She said she planned to contact members of Congress to determine whether a congressional committee would consider issuing its own subpoena.
The dispute comes amid broader Republican efforts to investigate fraud involving government-funded programs in Minnesota. Supporters of the subpoena say additional records are necessary to understand how the Feeding Our Future scheme expanded, while Democrats maintain that the effort lacks evidence connecting Omar to criminal wrongdoing.
