She spun around and raced down the hallway toward the master bedroom.
Richard followed immediately.
His bare feet struck the hardwood floor hard enough to hurt.
Behind him, Mrs. Rosa continued speaking to the dispatcher.
She gave instructions, reassured Ethan, and promised him that help was almost there.
Vanessa reached the bedroom first and slammed the door.
Richard struck it with his shoulder.
Once.
Twice.
On the third attempt, the wooden frame cracked and the door flew open.
Vanessa was already inside the bathroom.
Her hands trembled as she tried to unlock the cabinet beneath the sink.
“What are you doing?” Richard demanded.
She turned and pressed herself against the cabinet.
“Get out.”
Richard looked past her.
The cabinet door had not closed completely.
Through the opening, he saw a small plastic container.
It had a red lid and a white label.
His blood turned cold.
He stepped forward.
Vanessa slapped him across the face.
The sound echoed through the bathroom.
For one stunned second, neither of them moved.
Then Richard took hold of her wrist and moved her away from the cabinet.
He did not strike her.
He did not throw her.
But he held her firmly enough to make her understand that everything between them had changed.
Richard opened the cabinet.
At first, the contents appeared ordinary.
Expensive skincare products.
Perfume boxes.
A hair dryer.
A small makeup bag.
Then he pushed several bottles aside.
Behind them sat the plastic container.
He removed it with shaking hands.
The label read:
LIVE RED HARVESTER ANTS.
Beside the container were cotton pads, medical tape, a small bottle of sugar syrup, and a narrow metal tool.
Something inside Richard collapsed.
It was not caused by surprise.
It came from recognition.
Suddenly, every night made sense.
Ethan always began screaming after Vanessa offered to inspect his cast.
She had repeatedly insisted that Richard remain outside the room because the boy needed discipline.
She had contacted psychiatrists.
She warned Richard that Ethan was unstable.
She suggested he might injure himself to receive attention.
Vanessa had not merely tortured his son.
She had constructed an explanation around the torture.
She had made certain that if Ethan eventually broke down, Richard would blame the child rather than her.
Behind him, Vanessa spoke in a low voice.
“It was never supposed to go this far.”
Richard slowly turned around.
The sirens were now directly outside the house.
Rain struck the bathroom window.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa’s face collapsed, but even her tears appeared angry.
“He was destroying everything,” she said.
“Every day it was Laura this and Laura that.”
She pointed toward Richard.
“Every room belonged to her memory.”
“Every decision revolved around him.”
“I was your wife, Richard. I was supposed to matter.”
Richard stared at her.
“So you placed live ants inside my son’s cast?”
“He needed help,” she replied quickly.
“He needed to understand that demanding attention has consequences.”
Richard could not find words large enough to contain what he felt.
There was only horror.
Mrs. Rosa appeared in the bedroom doorway.
Her face had turned gray with fury.
“Mr. Miller,” she said, “the paramedics have arrived.”
Richard looked down at the container.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You are going to prison.”
Her expression hardened instantly.
“You will not do that.”
“I already have.”
“What are you talking about?”
Richard raised his phone.
The emergency call had never disconnected.
Every word Vanessa said had been heard by the dispatcher.
Her mouth opened.
No sound came out.
Heavy footsteps thundered up the staircase.
Paramedics rushed toward Ethan’s room.
Two police officers entered the master bedroom.
Richard stepped aside and held out the container.
“My wife did this,” he said.
Vanessa began screaming.
Not because she felt guilty.
Because she was furious that she had been exposed.
But Richard barely heard her.
From the room down the hallway came Ethan’s weak voice.
“Dad?”
Richard ran toward him.
