When I arrived at Nathaniel’s office, Julian was already seated inside the conference room.
Two attorneys in expensive suits sat beside him.
I placed the framed photograph on the table and took the chair opposite them.
“Let us be reasonable,” Julian began.
“Sign the waiver, and I will increase my offer to $50,000.”
“I did not come here to sign anything.”
One of his attorneys leaned forward.
“You should seriously consider the expense of prolonged litigation. Our client is offering you a substantial settlement.”
“Your client dismissed me after 18 years with $400.”
I folded my hands on the table.
“I would not describe him as generous.”
Nathaniel gave me a small, encouraging nod.
I reached into my handbag and removed the folded letter.
Julian immediately noticed it.
“What is that?”
“Something your father intended me to find.”
Nathaniel looked toward me.
“Marta, with your permission, I believe everyone in this room should hear what Mr. Whitaker wrote.”
My hands trembled as I unfolded the page.
Then I began reading.
“My dear Marta,
“If you are reading this letter, I am no longer there to thank you myself.
“You served my home with greater loyalty than anyone who carried my family name.
“You remained beside me when I was lonely, ill, grieving, and afraid.
“My son inherited my blood, but you earned my trust.
“Julian measured love according to what it might someday be worth.
“You gave your love freely and expected nothing in return.
“I leave this estate to you not because of anger, but because of gratitude.
“Never allow anyone to tell you that you do not belong in this home.
“You proved long ago that you do.”
When I finished, the room was completely silent.
All the color had disappeared from Julian’s face.
His attorneys exchanged a look.
I recognized that kind of silence from years of witnessing household disputes.
It was the moment everyone understood that the argument was over.
The older attorney began collecting his papers.
“We will contact you,” he said to Nathaniel.
Julian did not speak.
He stood and walked out of the conference room without looking at me.
For several seconds, I remained seated with the letter in my hands.
“He remembered me,” I whispered.
Nathaniel smiled gently.
“He never forgot you.”
