When my ten-year-old son Howard broke his leg, my ex-husband Jasper called and insisted it had been nothing more than a freak scooter accident. He claimed he had been standing in the driveway and had watched Howard lose his balance. I rushed to the hospital and found my son lying in a large bed with a bright blue cast around his leg. His eyes were red, and he would not look at me when I asked what had happened. Jasper quickly interrupted, repeating that Howard had not attempted any tricks and had simply slipped. Something felt wrong, but I did not want to frighten my injured son by arguing in front of him. That evening, a charge nurse entered to check Howard’s vital signs. When Jasper reached toward the bed to adjust the blanket, Howard flinched. The nurse noticed. As she walked past me, she secretly pressed a folded note into my hand. It read, “HE’S LYING. CHECK THE CAMERA AT 3 A.M.” In the hallway, she explained that the pediatric rooms had observation cameras recording audio and video. She told me to go to the security office just before 3 a.m. and ask to watch Channel 12. At 2:58, a guard pulled up the footage. Jasper’s chair beside Howard’s bed was empty. At exactly 3 a.m., the door opened, and Jasper entered with a woman I had never seen before.
