Something about her made me stop. Before I could overthink it, I stepped forward and paid for the cake. She stared at me in surprise, and then her expression changed from disappointment to deep relief.
She hugged me and softly explained that the cake was for her mother, who wasn’t feeling well. Later, I found a folded note in my pocket thanking me, along with a small drawing of a cake and one candle.
