After removing it, wash the bite and your hands with soap and water, then apply an antiseptic. Avoid using heat, petroleum jelly, gasoline, or nail polish, as these methods may increase the risk of infection.
Monitor the area for several weeks. Seek medical advice if you develop an expanding rash, fever, headache, muscle or joint pain, unusual tiredness, or increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus around the bite.
To prevent future bites, wear protective clothing, use suitable insect repellent, and check your body, pets, clothing, and outdoor equipment after spending time outside. Most tick bites do not cause illness, but correct removal and careful monitoring are important.
