Observe its color, size, and markings only from a safe distance, but do not rely on head shape alone to decide whether it is venomous. When uncertain, treat it as potentially dangerous and contact animal control or a trained wildlife-removal professional.
If someone is bitten, move away from the snake and seek emergency medical help immediately. Do not cut the wound, apply ice, use a tourniquet, or attempt to suck out venom.
After removal, seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, pipes, vents, and the foundation. Keep grass short, remove clutter and woodpiles near the house, and control rodents because snakes often enter homes while searching for food or shelter.
