Majority Don’t Know What This Sign Means

For cars, the national limit is generally 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Limits can be lower for vans and other larger vehicles.

The sign does not mean drivers should immediately accelerate to the maximum permitted speed. Weather, visibility, traffic, bends, and road conditions may require driving considerably slower.

Its purpose is to tell drivers that the previous local restriction has ended and the appropriate national limit now applies. Drivers remain responsible for choosing a safe speed while staying within that legal limit.
