Inside were screenshots, financial transfers, receipts, and messages between Nathan and Charlotte. One transfer read, “For Charlotte’s baby shower and our baby. Love you.” Another message mentioned Diane’s plan to convince me to sign away the property after the baby arrived. As I turned the evidence toward them, the room fell silent. I explained that this was not simply an affair. For months, they had been portraying me as emotional, irresponsible, and incapable of managing money so that when I eventually surrendered control of my own home, the family would accept it without question. I had already given copies of everything to my attorney.
Nathan tried to blame my reaction on pregnancy, but I stopped him before he could continue. I reminded Diane that the deed was in my name, the down payment had come from my inheritance, and they could not place property they did not own into their trust. Then I stood, collected my evidence, and left their unsigned documents on the table. There was no screaming or dramatic confrontation. I simply walked away while the people who had expected me to remain quiet were forced to explain the evidence sitting in front of their own relatives.
The following week, I filed for divorce. Eight weeks later, my daughter was born, and I brought her home to the apartment they had tried to take from me.
