Some medical conditions, including kidney, thyroid, liver, circulation, or neurological problems, can also contribute to cramps. Certain medications such as diuretics, statins, steroids, and some other drugs may play a role as well.

When a cramp happens, gently stretch and massage the muscle, flex the foot toward the shin, walk around, or use warmth from a shower or heating pad. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and regularly stretching the calf muscles may help prevent future episodes.

See a healthcare professional if cramps are severe, persistent, cause muscle weakness, regularly disturb your sleep, or occur with other unusual symptoms. Frequent cramps may sometimes signal an underlying condition that needs treatment.
