Watch for redness that spreads, worsening pain, increasing swelling, unusual warmth, pus, or drainage with a bad smell. A red streak moving away from the wound can also signal that an infection is spreading.
Fever, chills, tiredness, or a wound that becomes larger or fails to improve after several days are additional warning signs. Older adults, people with diabetes, weakened immunity, or certain chronic conditions may face a higher risk of complications.
Clean minor wounds gently with soap and water, keep them covered with a clean bandage, and avoid scratching or squeezing infected areas. Seek medical care if symptoms worsen, redness spreads, fever develops, or you suspect the infection is becoming more serious.
