Warning signs may include a sudden extremely severe headache, nausea or vomiting, blurred or double vision, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, seizures, or pain around or behind one eye.

Other possible symptoms include a drooping eyelid, facial weakness or numbness, fainting, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, dizziness, balance problems, and sudden confusion or unusual behavioral changes. These symptoms can also occur with other neurological emergencies.

A sudden “worst headache of your life,” especially with weakness, speech problems, seizures, or loss of consciousness, requires emergency medical attention immediately. Brain imaging such as CT, MRI, or angiography may be used to identify an aneurysm and determine the appropriate treatment.
