The genital area contains apocrine sweat glands that produce stronger scents than many other parts of the body. For medium and large dogs, this area is also conveniently at nose level, making it especially interesting to investigate.
This behavior does not mean the dog is being aggressive or disrespectful. It is simply a natural greeting and information-gathering habit, similar to how dogs sniff one another when they meet.
If the behavior makes you or guests uncomfortable, redirect the dog instead of punishing it. Teaching commands such as “sit,” rewarding polite greetings, and using puzzle toys or scent-based activities can help encourage better manners.
