Doctors highlighted sugary pastries, donuts, cakes, and other refined baked foods as breakfast choices that can quickly raise blood glucose. Sweetened cereals can have a similar effect because many contain large amounts of added sugar and relatively little fiber.
Sugary drinks, sweetened coffee, flavored milk, bottled tea, and sweetened soy milk can also cause rapid blood sugar increases because liquid sugar is absorbed quickly. Better breakfast choices combine protein, fiber, and healthy fats, such as eggs, yogurt, oats, vegetables, nuts, or seeds.
No single breakfast food causes diabetes by itself, but regularly eating highly processed, high-sugar foods can make blood sugar harder to control. Frequent thirst, urination, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, or unexplained weight changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
