Choosing a sweet, ripe watermelon does not have to be a guessing game. Start by checking the **field spot**, the area where the watermelon rested on the ground while growing. A creamy yellow or golden-colored spot is generally a better sign than a white one because it may indicate the melon had more time to mature on the vine. Next, examine the rind. It should feel firm and free of large soft spots, deep bruises, cracks, or obvious damage. Some watermelons also develop webbed or rough-looking markings on the surface, which can be useful clues, although they should not be treated as a guarantee of sweetness.
