What Does the M Mean on an RSVP Card?

That single “M” printed beside the blank line on a traditional wedding RSVP card has confused generations of guests. At first glance, it seems like it should be obvious, yet many people find themselves staring at it with a pen in hand, wondering what they are supposed to write. Some assume the letter means “Maybe,” while others wonder whether it has something to do with meal choices, marital status, or the number of guests attending. The answer is actually much simpler. The “M” is the beginning of a traditional courtesy title, allowing the guest to complete it with “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss” before writing their name.
