After roughly 45 minutes of resuscitation efforts, Miller’s pulse unexpectedly returned. Hospital staff were amazed that he later regained consciousness and was able to walk, talk, and laugh despite the seriousness of what had happened.
Miller later said that during the episode he remembered seeing a bright light and walking toward it along a path surrounded by flowers. He described meeting his deceased stepmother, who appeared happy and told him that it was not yet his time and that he still had things left to do.
The experience convinced Miller personally that an afterlife exists, although near-death experiences remain open to different interpretations and are not scientific proof of life after death. His remarkable recovery and vivid memories have nevertheless kept his story circulating for years as one of the more widely shared accounts of a near-death experience.
