Before going to sleep, there is one kitchen appliance that you must unplug at all costs to avoid a fire!

The condition of the outlet and power cord matters just as much as the appliance itself. Loose plugs, damaged cords, overloaded outlets, extension cords, or aging electrical systems can generate excessive heat and increase the chance of an electrical problem. Countertop appliances that draw significant power should generally be plugged directly into an appropriate wall outlet while operating rather than sharing overloaded adapters or power strips. If a plug or outlet becomes unusually warm, shows discoloration, produces a burning smell, sparks, or makes unusual sounds, stop using the appliance and have the problem inspected rather than continuing to rely on it.

Other countertop appliances—including coffee makers, electric kettles, and similar heating devices—can also be unplugged when they are not needed for extended periods. This does not mean that every appliance left plugged in will suddenly catch fire; modern products are designed with safety features, and the actual risk depends heavily on the model, its condition, and the electrical system supplying it. Still, disconnecting appliances that do not need continuous power eliminates one possible source of electrical malfunction. It is particularly sensible with older equipment, damaged appliances, products affected by safety recalls, or devices that behave unpredictably.

A useful nighttime routine is therefore simple: make sure cooking appliances are turned off, allow hot equipment to cool, keep combustible materials away from heating surfaces, inspect cords periodically, and unplug appliances that do not need to remain connected. Smoke alarms should also be installed and maintained because no single precaution can prevent every household fire. Rather than viewing unplugging as a guarantee against fire, think of it as one additional layer of protection. Taking a few seconds to disconnect an air fryer, toaster oven, kettle, or similar appliance before bed can reduce unnecessary electrical exposure and make the kitchen safer while everyone is asleep.
