For years, Hayden Panettiere faced painful criticism over why her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, lived primarily with her father, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, in Europe. Before Panettiere’s death at 36, she repeatedly rejected the idea that she had simply “given up” her daughter. She explained that after Kaya’s birth in December 2014, she struggled severely with postpartum depression, anxiety, alcoholism and substance abuse before eventually seeking treatment. When Kaya was around two, Klitschko became her primary caregiver in Europe. Although Hayden initially desperately wanted her daughter back with her, she said her perspective changed as she recovered.
