Stretching the affected muscle, gently massaging it, walking around, and applying warmth may help. Staying hydrated and stretching the calves before bed can also reduce how often cramps occur.
Frequent cramps can sometimes be linked to medications, mineral imbalances, poor circulation, nerve problems, kidney disease, or other health conditions. Persistent symptoms should not automatically be blamed on dehydration alone.
See a healthcare professional if cramps happen often, become severe, cause weakness, swelling, numbness, or regularly disturb your sleep. Sudden leg pain with major swelling, redness, or warmth needs more urgent medical evaluation.
