Centipedes feed on pests such as ants, silverfish, cockroaches, spiders, and other small insects. So finding one may also suggest there are other bugs in the home that are providing a food source.

Centipedes generally avoid people and bites are uncommon. When they do bite, symptoms are usually limited to redness, swelling, pain, itching, or burning, although a severe allergic reaction requires urgent medical attention.

To keep them away, reduce moisture, repair leaks, seal cracks and gaps, remove clutter, and control other household pests. Keeping rooms dry, clean, and well ventilated is one of the most effective ways to prevent them from returning.
