For years, Rachel convinced herself that working constantly was how she took care of her twelve-year-old daughter, Emily. She missed concerts, school events, and family time because there was always another deadline. Rachel admitted to Linda that she had resented how often Emily depended on her grandmother, but Linda explained that she had never tried to replace Rachel—she had simply been “standing in the empty chair.” When Emily saw Rachel outside and quietly said, “You came,” Rachel realized what needed to change.
