Some high-risk HPV types can persist and contribute to cancers of the throat, mouth, anus, and other areas. Men can also develop genital warts or other HPV-related conditions, even when they initially feel completely healthy.
HPV spreads mainly through close skin-to-skin sexual contact, and a person can transmit it without knowing they are infected. Condoms can reduce risk but do not provide complete protection because uncovered skin can still carry the virus.
Vaccination is one of the best ways to prevent HPV-related disease, along with safer sexual practices, avoiding smoking, regular medical care, and open communication with partners. Most HPV infections do not lead to cancer, but prevention and awareness remain important for both men and women.
