My father had included conditions specifically designed to prevent either child from unfairly excluding the other from the family home.
When Clara met with the lawyer, she learned that changing the locks did not give her the final say. The estate documents gave both of us rights and responsibilities, meaning neither of us could simply decide what happened to the house based on our own interpretation of Dad’s wishes.
The biggest surprise was that Dad had not secretly left everything to me either. His real plan was to make sure the house could not become a weapon in a family dispute.
