Persistent heartburn that does not improve with treatment can also deserve attention, particularly when it appears together with chest discomfort, swallowing problems, or unexplained weight loss. Chest pain may sometimes feel like indigestion or burning behind the breastbone.
Other possible symptoms include unexplained weight loss, persistent coughing, hoarseness, painful swallowing, frequent choking while eating, vomiting after meals, or repeatedly feeling that food is getting stuck.
These symptoms do not automatically mean someone has cancer, because many can have less serious causes. However, symptoms that persist, worsen, or occur together should be evaluated by a healthcare professional so the underlying cause can be identified early.
