Avoid saying, “They’re in a better place” or “At least they lived a long life.” These phrases may make the grieving person feel that their pain is being dismissed.
It is also better not to say, “I know exactly how you feel.” Everyone experiences grief differently, so offering support without assuming you understand their exact emotions is usually more helpful.
Another phrase to avoid is “Everything happens for a reason.” Instead of searching for explanations, simply acknowledge their pain, offer your condolences, and let them know you are there for them.
