Vitamin C or K deficiencies, intense exercise, and certain medicines such as aspirin or blood thinners can also increase bruising. Some supplements may have a similar effect by making it harder for the blood to clot normally.
Less commonly, frequent unexplained bruises may be linked to conditions such as diabetes, bleeding disorders, liver or kidney disease, autoimmune problems, or illnesses that affect blood platelets. These conditions usually cause other symptoms as well.
Most bruises fade within about two weeks. However, if bruises appear suddenly without explanation, happen very frequently, cause severe pain, or do not heal normally, it is best to speak with a healthcare professional to find the underlying cause.
