The truth began coming out on Mom’s 72nd birthday. Richard once again checked his watch and left before dessert, so my daughter Chloe followed him. She later returned with his leather bag, which contained photographs, memory cards, a music box, and a note identifying an elderly woman named Evelyn as Richard’s mother.
Richard finally admitted that Evelyn, 86, lived in a memory-care facility and suffered from dementia. Nights were especially difficult for her, so he visited every Sunday to comfort her. He had hidden the responsibility because a previous relationship had ended when his partner couldn’t accept how much care his mother required.
Instead of being angry, Mom told Richard he never had to choose between loving her and caring for Evelyn. From then on, Sunday dinners sometimes included his mother, and the family helped make her feel welcome. The secret that once looked like betrayal turned out to be something very different: a devoted son quietly caring for the mother who increasingly struggled to remember him.
