Typical symptoms include mild itching, tingling, burning, or slight swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat shortly after eating the fruit. These reactions are usually mild and often disappear quickly.

Fresh strawberries may cause stronger reactions than cooked or processed strawberry products because heat changes the proteins responsible for the reaction. That is why some children may react to raw berries but tolerate jam, yogurt, or baked foods containing strawberries.

If symptoms include trouble breathing, throat tightness, widespread hives, vomiting, or worsening swelling, urgent medical care is needed. For recurring or unclear reactions, an allergist can help determine whether the problem is OAS or a more serious food allergy.
